Hurricane Gordon’s sustained winds have increased to almost 105 miles (165 kilometers) per hour as the storm continues its approach toward the Azores, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
The now Category 2 storm is about 590 miles west-southwest of the Azores, the Miami-based center said in its latest advisory. An earlier advisory indicated sustained winds of 80 mph, classified as a Category 1 hurricane on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale.
Tropical storm conditions are expected in the central and eastern Azores by late tomorrow, with hurricane conditions tomorrow night and into Aug. 20.
Gordon is moving east at 21 mph, the center said. Rainfall amounts over the Azores is expected to total 3 to 6 inches, the agency said.
