'Ernesto' has become a hurricane and is moving on a west-northwest track toward a landfall just north of the border between Belize and Mexico Tuesday night into early Wednesday. Ernesto's rain and wind will first begin to arrive during the day on Tuesday.
Residents of northern Belize and adjacent portions of Mexico's southern Yucatan Peninsula should be prepared for category one hurricane conditions. Hurricane warnings now include the island of Cozumel.
A tropical storm warning is in effect for the Mexico vacation spot of Cancun. This area will see some bands of heavy rain and gusty winds through Wednesday, but the worst of Ernesto's impacts should pass to their south.
After weakening as it moves across the Yucatan, Ernesto may emerge into the far southwestern Gulf of Mexico late Wednesday or early Thursday. Some restrengthening is expected before Ernesto makes a final landfall on mainland Mexico.
