A strong line of thunderstorms brought heavy rains through the Washington region late Thursday night, cutting power to about 17,000 customers and flooding creeks and some roads, authorities said.
As of 11 p.m., the District was hit the hardest by power outages, with 7,700 reported by Pepco. About 6,300 Pepco customers in Montgomery County also were without electricity, along with 2,900 in Prince George’s County.
In Northern Virginia, Dominion Power reported about 1,500 outages, many in areas west of Fairfax city.
In Montgomery County, rain poured down at a rate of as much as 1.5 inches an hour, and the rain was generally heavier in western parts of the county, the National Weather Service said. Authorities responded to flooded roadways in the Gaithersburg and Rockville areas, but no injuries were reported.
In the District, heavy rains again flooded Rhode Island Avenue NE, a low-lying area that has been pummeled by storms repeatedly in recent weeks. At least one vehicle was reported stranded in high water in the 600 block, police said.
An earlier line of storms poured over Baltimore about 7:30 p.m. and dumped rainfall at a rate of about 2.5 inches an hour, the National Weather Service said. Significant flooding was reported, along with about 7,000 power outages in Baltimore and Baltimore County.
