Officials said it killed 965 people, but independent estimates put casualties at more than 3,000. Thousands were left homeless in the freezing mountain winter. February 3, 1997 -- Two powerful quakes rock the city of Bojnurd in northeastern Iran, flattening villages of mud homes, killing at least 72 people and injuring more than 200. November 7, 1990 -- An earthquake rocks 18 villages around the city of Darab, about 600 miles (1,000 kilometers) southeast of Tehran, killing 22 villagers, severely injuring 100 and leaving more than 12,000 homeless. June 21, 1990 -- Two earthquakes kill 50,000 people and injure 60,000 in northwestern Gilan and Zanjan provinces. The earthquakes leave half a million homeless. September 16, 1978 -- Earthquake in eastern Khorasan province kills 25,000 people. August 31, 1968 -- Earthquake in Khorasan kills 12,000 people. September 1, 1962 -- An earthquake in Iran's fertile Zanjan province kills 12,230 people.
