Beginning July 4th 2012, eighteen (18) M-class flares have fired off from the Sun; 12 of which occurred within the last 24 hours.
The largest one measured an M6.1 flare which occurred at 11:44 UT. All twelve M-class flares were produced by sunspot region 1515, except for the M1.8 flare at 16:39 UT yesterday from region 1513. Expect more flaring at M-class level from these regions and possibly also from region 1519 that is crossing over the eastern limb of the Sun.
There is a small chance for an X-flare from region 1515. In case of such a big flare, a proton event is possible as this region is moving towards the western solar limb - placing it to be Earth directed.
All CMEs (coronal mass ejections) associated with this series of M-class flares appear to be Earth directed. Both STEREO/COR2 instruments show an earth-directed limb CME for this event entering at 17:24.
Equation:
Sunspots => Solar Flares (charged particles) => Magnetic Field Shift => Shifting Ocean and Jet Stream Currents => Extreme Weather and Human Disruption (mitch battros 1998 updated 2012)
Watch for extreme weather to continue for at least the next 5 days. It is most likely to continue beyond five days as solar flares and CMEs carry forward wave after wave.
