Thoughts on Critical Thinking and Discernment - A Personal Reflection

Discernment is an innate gift which gives us a measure of choice; but it is the learned skill of "critical thinking" - some of which acquired in college resulting in a greater ability of decision making.

Although the formation of critical thinking dates back 2,500 years to the time of Socrates, the most recent regeneration of this skill re-surfaced during the turbulent atmosphere of the 60s. It was a generational revolution which brought confusion and dis-ease to families and communities. It was also the birth of a most profound sentiment captured in a very simple statement: "Always Question Authority".

I was lucky enough (actually double-edged sword) to have been schooled in this period which carried into the 70s. It was when I attended college at SWTSU in the late 70s and for the first time broke free from what I describe as a mostly conservative, more than moderate structured community and scholastic environment. But then this was pretty much the norm of the whole country as we were still tethered to the 1940s.

Again, I would say I was fortunate (others might say damned) to have two professors which taught (even mentored) in the way of a new academic 'nuance' (understanding or refinement) in the ways of decision-making, structuring of belief systems, observing patterns of thought. This method or technique had become known as "critical thinking" and had manifested to become a selective course taught in universities, colleges, and even some high schools. Still in some circles it is known as the skill of "Socratic Questioning" referencing what many believe to be its origin attached to Socrates.

Although I did implement this learning in mostly superficial ways thereafter, it wasn't until 1995 after experiencing a true - moment of clarity - vision - epiphany - revelation (choose your own noun) that the full weight of critical thinking came crashing upon me. I had just begun my television show "Earth Changes TV" and began to invite scientists on the show to discuss their field of science. Of course the context of the show naturally brought on leading scientists from NASA, NOAA, ESA (European Space Agency), US Naval Observatory, USGS geologists, Royal Observatory and the list goes on.

It didn't take long when I found myself a little more than three months into ECTV's weekly show, an unforeseen and unexpected quandary presented itself. Of course at first I was so excited to just be talking to these highly qualified scientists in all the world, so I was very careful with my questioning and also for the fact my self-knowledge was very limited. Then after becoming more familiar with their research, and as a natural transition of studying others research, I began my own; soon thereafter, I was finding great gaps between scientific disciplines.

At first I found this unsettling and perhaps a bit of cognitive-dissonance had set-in. I just could not grasp that well educated; highly credentialed world known scientists could be so differing in their observations. NOTE: My statements have nothing to do with woo-woo conspiracy theories of secrecy or crack-pot ideas of disinformation. What I am referencing is

something I stumbled onto over 17 years ago, and prior to the rampant contamination in the field of science we see today i.e. the politicizing of science such as the global warming lie. In very simple terms - what I found was simply the "left hand did not know what the right had was doing."

So what I have come away with is a better understanding of how the science community operates in today's time. As in the field of medicine, where doctors are being directed into choosing specialized fields i.e. heart surgeon, eye-ear-nose, allergies, orthopedic, hand specialist, shoulder specialist, hip specialist, etc. etc. - the field of science has taken the same path.

When I interviewed folks from NOAA, they would tell me about the ocean, a bit about weather patterns, jet stream oscillations, and even a bit about lower atmosphere. But when I asked them about the Earth's magnetic field and the Sun, they said and in more than one instance I quote: "Uh, you'll have to go to NASA for that information. What? I asked myself, are you kidding me!

So of course I would have on the show folks from NASA - and asked them similar questions pertaining to weather patterns, earth changing phenomenon such as earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes etc. Here, NASA could tell me about the solar cycles, shifting magnetic field, solar flares, CMEs etc. But when I asked about the Earth's core, the "specialized pattern" continued. I was directed to the USGS regarding earthquakes, volcanoes, sea level variances; which helped put the puzzle together but stopped short. So again, I was directed to "specialized geologists" who specifically studied the Earth's core. So of course I did just that and found myself with two world renowned scientists in their field. Dr. Gary Glatzmaier and Dr. Peter Olson.

Let me sum this up, even thou I can see there will need to be a Part II. It was when I was doing research for my book "Solar Rain: The Earth Changes Have Begun", that I discovered the complexities of well established peer-reviewed research needed to be folded bringing together the "left-hand" with the "right-hand" to produce a more fitting view of today's cyclical events.

When I completed my first book 'Solar Rain', I included interviews with me as the guest into my duties here at Earth Changes Media. Instantly, I began to receive outrageous crazy emails telling me how they (or so and so) had secret information about NASA, or aliens, or the illuminati, or the MI 12, crystal towers on the moon, planet-x is coming, comet Elenin is a spaceship .... I could go on and on.

But what disturbed me the most, is when I would receive emails of people (including children) who really believed this stuff. I mean they were really concerned, even frightened. It was at this point I decided to not play this game. There was too much "real" tangible, scientifically sound events going on for me to play some sort of cloak-and-dagger bs.

For the next few years, maybe from 2000 to 2005, I went head-to-head with these people. I called it for what it was, and as you might imagine, they didn't like it. I have been called a secret agent, a dis-information agent for NASA, employee of the NSA and the list goes on. However, in fairness, if I said things some of the scientists I interviewed didn't like, I was cut off for a certain period having access to scientists at NASA, NOAA, and NWS (National Weather Service). Although they didn't say it overtly, the message was I had become another woo-woo sensationalist and for them to stay away.

Luckily, this didn't last very long and for the last several years I have been able to maintain my status with both the scientific community, the metaphysical community, and the ancient tribes community. I have no doubt; it was my training in "critical thinking" which kept me focused and on task.

Perhaps to your surprise, I still maintain an open mind to things unknown. In order to do this, I remain close to, and implement the taught outline of critical thinking for all information which comes across my desk. I simply ask the sender of whatever sensational news they might send i.e. Planet-X, comet Elenin, pole shift (crustal displacement) - six simple questions. And to no surprise I almost never get a reply. But for those I do - it's "game-on" - and perhaps there is a stashed away part of me hoping their reply has merit and something very different is about to happen.

QUESTIONS FOR SENSATIONAL NEWS

1) Where did you (they) get this information?

2) Has this been corroborated by others?

3) What confirmation, endorsements, documentation have you (they) received

4) Who is your (their) governing body, sponsor, mentor, elder, teacher?

5) Have you (they) presented this to your (their) colleagues or community for review?

6) May I have the names and contact information of what you (they) refer to as "credible evidence".

**It looks like a Part-II is needed to further my thoughts. Look for it this week.
