September Astrology Report
Copyright August 2000, Roxana Muise
September includes a major T cross, 2 retrograde stations, 4 squares, a Full and a New Moon, 5 planetary ingresses, 8 parallels and 2 contra-parallels. The month begins with emphasis on inner personal processes aimed at making adjustments in our capacity for freedom. A shift to an emphasis on relationships occurs on the 7th that lasts until the 24th, when the need for evolutionary change outweighs personal issues.
Energy throughout September will be fast-paced and social, with hidden turmoil for many. Major changes are possible in personal habit patterns and understandings. Some of us will feel forced to make inner modifications for which we may not yet feel ready.
The Mars/Uranus opposition on August at 18 Leo/Aquarius (expect the unexpected) activates the 17 Taurus degree where Mars met Saturn in April, and the stellium of all the planets in Taurus in May. Value systems will again be under attack, and disagreements blown all out of proportion.
9/1 Sun waxing square Jupiter 9:46 PM, 10:01 Virgo/Gemini. The approaching T square in the next 3 days bring us a building process that includes confrontation and crisis in defining our beliefs, and determining where each one of us fits in the scheme of society and its patterns. Action and consciousness hold equal parts in responsible action. Honorable social standing and recognition for achievements help to bolster self-esteem and growth. Creative power is strong, and needs to have constructive outlets to avoid violence. Manipulation and misdirection are highly possible during this aspect.
9/2 Sun waning square Pluto 2:00 PM, 10:11 Virgo/Sagittarius. Part of this T square.
9/4 Labor Day; Jupiter opposition Pluto 3:53 AM, 10:12 Gemini/Sagittarius. This T configuration will be re-activated at the end of this month, and during the first week in October. Intermittently, the volatile energy will go underground or be masked. Forgiveness and reparation are antidotes for built-up anger and resentment.
9/7 Mercury enters Libra 3:23 PM. Fairness will be sought in all mental pursuits. Awareness and communication can offer remedies to suffering, but require individual direction to be implemented. Courage is required to accomplish this.
9/10 through 9/26: Sun contra-parallels Venus and Mercury, Mars parallels Mercury, Venus and Pluto. Pluto is paralleled by both Mercury and Venus, and Mercury parallels Venus. I liken these interactions to attendees at a cocktail party, milling about, greeting each other up close (parallels), or from across the room (contra-parallels). The close-up meetings bring intensity and potential for more interactions. The salutes from across the room are invitations for future interaction, and impart intuitive information. Lots of initial contacts will be made, that may be resumed and developed later.
9/12 Saturn stationary retrograde 4:35 AM, 0:58 Gemini. That which previously seemed solid and reliable begins to show wear. Structures must be reevaluated and shored up, in order to maintain patterns put into effect in early June. Actually, there were signs of weakness then for those who were open to perceiving them. This process provides time for reorganization until next May if we don't become too attached to the old models.
9/13 Harvest Full Moon 21:18 Pisces/Virgo; west coast, 12:37 PM, east coast 3:37 PM. Fulfillment is possible for individuals who build their hopes by exploring the spiritual basis of mental and emotional processes. This is a favorable time to examine the deceptions and illusions that touch your life. West coast circumstances involve possible misinterpretation of values, and the coordination of home and career. On the east coast, establish a connection between personal and shared values. It may be difficult to be direct in pursuits - regular channels may be blocked, and intermediaries may be of value.
9/16 Mars enters Virgo 5:20 PM. Make sure that responsibilities are discharged before starting anything new. Work on details, and expect that changes will be demanded if sloppy work is done. If you choose work that is fulfilling, joy can replace drudgery. Patience will save much time and energy.
9/18 Mars waxing square Saturn 5:17 AM, 0:56 Virgo/Gemini. Turmoil within groups or organizations will demand responsible leadership. Fear and loss of hope needs to be replaced with trust and confidence.
9/22 Autumn Equinox: west coast 10:28 AM, east coast 1:28 PM. Festival of Mabon. As we enter the dark half of the year in the northern hemisphere, we are greeted by an easy balance between structure and spirit (grand trine with Saturn and Neptune). Individual energies must be applied to liberate this potential. West coast energies can emphasize community groups and build relationship structures based on visions of the future. On the east coast, spiritual values balanced with responsible service can bring strength to foreign relations.
9/24 Venus enters Scorpio 8:26 AM. A vast new network opens up to us. New links can be formed with simple adjustments. Keep your mind open for new possibilities, and be willing to entertain new values that may enrich your lives.
9/27 Venus waning square Neptune 12:34 PM, 3:52 Scorpio/Aquarius; With a strong challenge connected to the grand trine, deceptions and illusions may be uncovered and rejected so that strong values may be implemented and supported. New Moon 5:00 Libra, west coast 12:53 PM, east coast 3:53 PM. The Moon joins the Sun in the grand trine, and makes new beginnings possible. With many people investigating the illusions of the past, new stabile values may be stated with authority. West coast emphasis on group focus continues, as does east coast emphasis on foreign relations. Add the possibilities of wish fulfillment on the west coast, and reaching higher consciousness on the east coast.
9/28 Mercury enters retrograde shadow 29:57 Libra, then enters Scorpio 6:28 AM Add thoughtful scrutiny to the above equation, as Mercury becomes a part of the configuration of a grand trine connected by two planetary squares. This becomes an extremely important pattern, as Mercury will keep this configuration active throughout the end of this year. Be on the lookout for hints and clues about ways to resolve issues, and expect that information to surface slowly, and to connect on different levels as Mercury traces and retraces his steps through October and November.
9/29 Jupiter stationary retrograde 5:53 AM, 11:53 Gemini. People continue plodding along using traditional methods of accomplishing tasks, but quantum leaps begin to work for those who embrace Jupiter's energies. Jupiter, a part of an "almost" T cross with Pluto and Mars now through October, joins the energy of the above mentioned grand trine near the end of the year, as bountiful Jupiter makes his direct station at the point where Saturn is now. Expansive Jupiter unites these two configurations, and we may expect mergers and buy-outs throughout October. New, talented people will fill many top management positions. This will be a great testing time.
Note: Unless otherwise stated, all times are for the west coast of the United States (Seattle).
September Symbology
September was named for the seventh month of the old Roman calendar. September's gemstone is the sapphire. Sapphires come in all colors, blue being the most favored. Ancients believed that the Earth rested upon a giant sapphire, which gave the sky its blue color. Sapphires dipped in cool water and placed upon the eyes were believed to cure vision disorders. A sapphire bound on the forehead was said to cure diseases of the mind, and to clear the third eye.
The astrological year is divided according to the travel of the Sun through the signs of the zodiac, which is offset from the modern calendar months. During the first part of September, the Sun is in Virgo, one of the signs associated with Mercury.
September’s special days begin with Labor Day, the first Monday of the month, which was instituted to honor workers. The feast of the nativity of the Virgin Mary is celebrated on September 8. Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year is on September 30th. Actually, in the Hebrew tradition holy days begin at sunset on the previous day. Is that any less logical than beginning a day in the dark of night (at midnight)? September 19th is the Feast of Thoth, the Egyptian god of wisdom and magic, their version of Mercury. Mercury was known in Greece as Hermes. Hermes had a reputation as "The Trickster," which is still appropriate in modern times. There was once an asteroid named Hermes, which disappeared two weeks after it was discovered, and has not been observed since. The trickster was a shapeshifter, who has taken the form of the coyote, and several birds, such as the crow. The crow, a remarkably clever bird has a propensity for thievery, and has been known to outwit humans. They are the most sociable of all bird species, bonding not only with their own families, but with humans as well. Crows have been known to mimic human words, and are one of the loudest and most raucous of all birds. Cicero was reported to have been forewarned of his death by the presence of a raven (cousin to the crow.) Odin, another form of Mercury carried a raven on each shoulder. One of Hermes’ duties was to guide the souls of the dead to the underworld. Ravens and crows followed the troops in wartime, and feasted on the battlefield carnage, to the dismay of the surviving soldiers. When the angry soldiers shot at them, the birds deftly stayed out of range of their fire. The term "eating crow" came from the humiliation and insult suffered from watching casualties being devoured by these birds. A crowbar is a tool that enables entry into a difficult place without a key. Groups of other birds are referred to as a flock of geese, a charm of finches, or convocation of eagles, but a group of crows are referred to as a "murder of crows." In the Hawaiian Zodiac, Mahoe Mua and Mahoe Hope encompass the month of September. People born in this time are an enigma. The saying is that their first conscious act dictates how they will conduct their life. A mischievous act will create a life filled with mischief, and a beneficent act will create a life of goodness. Mercury's first act was a tricky act of thievery. Mercury passes its beginning shadow point on September 28th.
Although the traditional name for the September pleneluna (full Moon) is the Harvest Moon, Wiccan ritual refers to it as the Barley Moon, in thanksgiving for all that the revered nature spirits have allowed during the growing season.
Mabon, the autumnal equinox is the second station of the year -- the festival that marks the point of transition between light and dark halves of the year. It is sacred to the mother and daughter Greek goddesses Demeter and Persephone, and the Irish goddess Carman, patroness of poetry, and the Norse fertility god Frey. It marks the middle of the transformation of the childbearing mother into the crone. If we choose to convert to a new framework, it must be done from within. Perception paints our consciousness. As William Blake wrote: "The greatest discovery in our generation is that human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives."
