Cosmic events
occurring in May include two squares, three conjunctions, three
oppositions, two planetary ingresses, three retrograde stations,
one full Moon, and one new Moon. Mercury is involved in five of
the eight orbital aspects, as well as moving into one of his own
special signs, Gemini, and becoming the key dynamic force in energy
patterns from May 5 through the end of the month. Mental pursuits
will be dominant in most situations. Inquiring minds will pursue
the truth, and riddles will be posed that require many resources
to solve. But, uncovering facts alone will leave a nagging thread
of doubt, unless deeper meaning is sought.
5/3 Mercury
squares Uranus 24:33 Taurus/Aquarius, 3:42 AM An intense and dynamic
time for all, there will be a testing of innovative or argumentative
patterns adopted last January. Indecision that was tolerated then
returns to be addressed. Challenge demands resolution. Avoid deferring
to others' opinions, it's time to state your viewpoints and stick
by them.
5/5 Mercury
enters Gemini 9:53 PM. The trickster will be busy with a hand
in every dealing. Business and personal agreements and communications
reminiscent of last May offer new awarenesses. Collect facts and
information to prepare for an escalation in communication and
media coverage. Keep your statements simple, and prepare succinct
responses. An economy of words will be powerful as well as appreciated.
5/6 Jupiter
opposes Pluto Rx 14:40 Gemini/Sagittarius 3:40 AM (the last of
3) Mercury conjuncts Saturn 2:01 Gemini, 11:26 PM. Vying for positions
of power will occur. Emotional arguments used to sway someone
from reason can be a two-edged sword. Previous ideas and programs
that had the support of those in authority seemed to thrive. Soon,
ideas that have merit and/or a good track record may supplant
those. New discoveries and perspectives regarding responsibilities
produce intensity and conflict between long-term and short-term
goals. The trick is to exclude neither, but to integrate both
with patience and care.
5/7 Full Moon,
17:04 Scorpio, west coast 6:53 AM; east coast 9:53 AM This is
very special cosmic event! Aspects are close, and every planet
is involved. Past involvement includes 2/5/2000 and 1/22/2001
when the focal point was 17 Leo/Aquarius. There will be a strong
desire to unite unlike items or ideas, and some unrealistic expectations
can bring disagreement and disappointment. Sensitivity involving
foreign travel or policies can avoid potentially dangerous conditions.
Those who use their creativity and imagination for their livelihood
will publicly express their passion. The urge for freedom can
be recognized and fulfilled through unifying with others of like
minds. Ultimatums will fail, better to put the energy into practical
compromise. On the west coast secret plans are focused through
work, health and service. East coast situations deal with group
involvement in hopes and yearnings focused onto artistic endeavors.
5/10 Neptune
turns retrograde 8:47 Aquarius, 6:13 PM Opportunities arise to
question the illusions in your world. Also take time to communicate
your spiritual values, and evaluate sacrifices you have made or
can make that will make a difference in your or another's life.
Develop your intuitive or sensitive abilities by looking at everyday
events with new perspectives.
5/11 Mars
turns retrograde 29:03 Sagittarius, 9:08 AM Much energy will be
spent questioning the wisdom of possible rash actions taken since
the conjunction with Pluto in March. This is a lonely time to
be second-guessing past performance, but it does need to be done
to gain peace of mind and to decide what can be put right.
5/14 Mercury
opposes Pluto Rx 29:03 Gemini/Sagittarius, 10:52 AM Exaggeration
and intolerant behavior blows situations out of proportion. To
gain agreement, and find fulfillment of purpose, compromise can
offer new perspectives. Ultimatums will just create standoffs,
and nobody will achieve success. Many different options are possible.
5/15 Sun squares
Uranus 29:45 Taurus/Aquarius, 6:06 AM A classic challenge of authority
brings forth issues of emotion vs. logic. Crises demand patience
and thoughtfulness to bring resolution.
5/16 Mercury
conjuncts Jupiter 16:52 Gemini, 4:15 AM Thoughtful discussions
and negotiations can add stability to negations started on 5/14.
Mediation may be needed to reassure disparate parties of their
commitments to finding a meeting of minds.
5/20 Sun enters
Gemini 4:44 PM Unique individuals may be emerge in leadership
roles. Support for new methods of interaction can herald the end
of old, traditional models. (See Gemini symbolism)
5/22 New Moon
2:03 Gemini, west coast 7:46 PM; east coast 10:46 PM Proposed
new projects seem plagued with delays. Instead of getting caught
up in frustration, use this time to examine your basic structure,
and make sure your values are solid. You may discover some important
item that was overlooked. The competition will be under the same
stress. Whoever makes the fewest mistakes is likely to succeed.
West coast issues involve partnerships or contracts. East coast
themes may involve investments, recreation or entertainment.
5/25 Sun conjuncts
Saturn 4:22 Gemini, 5:33 AM New responsibilities with delayed
or absent compensation can trigger feelings of depression. Standing
up for your worth depends on your self-evaluation and the courage
of your convictions. Remaining stuck where you are not appreciated
must be evaluated. In some cases, well-earned recognition can
appear.
5/26 Mercury
opposes Mars Rx 27:31 Gemini/Sagittarius, 11:03 PM Do what you
can to solve your problems a little at a time from within, without
issuing ultimatums? Dialog with those in authority to learn and
discuss their expectations. Reevaluate your expectations. Communication
misunderstandings are likely at the root of relationship problems.
5/29 Uranus
turns retrograde 24:50 Aquarius, 8:11 AM Collective finances take
an unusual turn. Relationships take on new interest, and passion
can be reawakened. Old patterns make no sense, but opportunities
present themselves to make changes within that create exciting
new attractions.
May Symbolism
May was named
for Maia Majestas, the goddess of spring and mother of Hermes
(AKA Mercury). Other goddesses are honored in May: Maya, mother
source of the Buddha; Greek goddess Rhea, the mother of Zeus and
other Olympians; and Cybele, her Roman counterpart. Modern day
mothers are honored in the United States and many other countries
on the second Sunday of this month.
The gemstone
of May is the green emerald, said to improve psychic powers, sharpen
intellect, intuition and memory. It is also reported to improve
learning ability and communication, and to heal the nervous system.
The emerald is associated with the planet Mercury and the sense
of smell.
The first
of May is the festival of Beltane, which means good fire. The
fiery nature of the Sun reaches the midpoint between the spring
equinox and the summer solstice by May 5th. It opens a connection
between the personal and the communal -- the seasonal and the
celestial levels, that can offer purification and healing for
those willing to open up to new ideals and attitudes. Beltane
is one of the eight sacred nature festivals, based on the apparent
movement of the Sun as it defines the seasons of the year.
The full Moon
in May celebrates the enlightenment of the Buddha under the Bodhi
tree.
Samuel F.
B. Morse inaugurated the first telegraph message between Washington,
DC, and Baltimore, MD on May 24, 1844; and Alexander Graham Bell
sent his first successful telephone transmission on June 2, 1875
in Boston, MA. Success in both communication devices was achieved
with the Sun in Gemini.
May 28 is
Memorial Day in the United States, and this year marks the Jewish
feast of Shavuot, the festival of the first fruits and the gift
of the Torah. Shavuot is seven weeks after Passover. This is a
good time to reflect on the gifts of Spirit and Law that enable
us to live honorably and reputably. It's also an excellent time
to recognize and appreciate these attributes in our associates.
Memorial Day is the remembrance and honoring of those who have
given up their lives in the service of their country.
The Labors
of Hercules
The Sun changes
signs two-thirds of the way through each month. Solar symbolism
is reflected in Twelve Labors of Hercules (Greek, Herakles). These
myths guide us through the soul's journey and the tests that can
help us to gain spiritual awareness through our physical environments.
Hercules was a Solar demi-god; his name means "prince of
the Sun." There are many versions of the story of the Labors
of Hercules to be found in most books of Greek and Roman Mythology.
It matters not what their order, as individuals may be working
on more than one such process at once, and sometimes interactively.
And so, I begin with Gemini.
Born of Zeus
and Alcmene (a mortal), Hercules was given 12 tests or labors
by his half-brother, Eurystheus (who symbolizes Hercules' inner
witness, or monitor) to prove his worthiness. The Labor that equates
with Gemini is the task of finding and collecting two golden apples
from the garden of Hesperides. In order to fulfill this task,
Hercules faced many difficulties and tests, including locating
the garden, defeating several foes in combat, outwitting Atlas
in his attempt to avoid his responsibility of holding up the heavens,
beheading the 100-headed dragon, and freeing Prometheus from bondage.
At the end of his labors, he created two pillars (gigantic rocks)
at the Strait of Gibraltar, symbolizing the solidity of the whole
through the joining of opposites.
Gemini's test
of the soul deals with adhering to a singleness of purpose amidst
a multitude of activities; being resourceful and versatile while
maintaining mercurial precision in the responsibility at hand;
developing inherent resourcefulness; recognizing that divine polarity
embraces diversity, while recognizing that divisiveness destroys
incentive and limits possibilities, and that an extreme is only
one expression of wholeness.
Along this
path there are many pitfalls, supporting limitation in a world
of boundless possibilities; allowing exaggeration and misrepresentation
to disguise mistakes or laziness; failing to champion your beliefs;
using others' vulnerability for your own purposes. Dualistic perspectives
that limit our creativity include: plenty or poverty, hope or
fear, health or disease. There is a full spectrum of choices between
each polarity.
Once Hercules
succeeded in his task, he was rewarded by the gift of the golden
apples from Eurystheus, which he then returned to their rightful
place, symbolizing the triumph over the mundane world; and confirming
that fulfilling his potential was the most important goal.
A brilliant
Gemini maxim by W.B. Yeats: "The best lack all conviction,
while the worst are full of passionate intensity
Surely
some revelation is at hand
"
CALCULATIONS
FOR THE MONTHLY ASTROLOGY REPORT
The Monthly
Astrology Report is written for the continental United States.
The interpretations are based on aspects between the transiting
planets, and their positions within their relative cycles. New
and full Moon charts are calculated for the Pacific and Eastern
time zones in order to locate the focus of energy within the environment.
Because the
difference in the chart positions between the east and west coast
are only one house apart on average, Central and Mountain time
zones will correspond to either one interpretation or the other.
Those who live in those zones can either see which description
fits them more closely, or erect a chart in their time zone to
get a more accurate forecast.
The longitude
distance between Seattle and Washington DC (where I calculate
for the two interpretations), rather than behaving like a fixed
doorway, acts like a curtain that sways over time and distance.
I use Placidus house cusps in my interpretations. The angles and
house cusps move very little within the U.S. latitudes.
The longitudes
of new and full Moon positions are located in different houses
each month, depending on location. I have found that this method
is much more specific than using a natural wheel with Aries on
the ascendant, or a Solar chart that puts the Sun on the ascendant,
midheaven, or descendant. Obviously, environment makes a difference
in interpretation.
