January
sponsors four conjunctions (including a new moon), six squares,
one opposition (a Lunar eclipse), four ingresses, and two direct
stations. Uranus receives the flow of energy from all planets
all month long. Expect the unexpected. Anticipate even changes
in the way that change usually occurs. Be ready for the unique,
the rebellious, the exciting to be revealed. Confrontation is
the mode of the day - tempers will be thin and self-control in
short supply. However, electrifying inspiration will be available
for all.
1/1/01 Mars
square Neptune 5:21 Scorpio/Aquarius, 9:02 AM: Time to question
and confront life's perceived problems. Conscious awareness of
everyday situations can help to reveal illusions and to avoid
costly mistakes. Replace destructive emotions with positive antidotes:
hope in place of doubt; encouragement instead of despair, confidence
as an alternative for inadequacy.
1/3/01 Venus enters Pisces 10:14 AM: The capacity to attract that
which makes us happy and comfortable is possible through the integration
of inspirational or spiritual principles. Implement a meditation
program, or positive affirmations to focus on your goals.
1/5/01 Venus square Jupiter Rx 1:52 Pisces/Gemini, 3:14 AM:
Use discrimination and discipline in the pursuit of enjoyment
and pleasure. Get expert opinions on investments. Overextending
your resources could lead to difficult situations.
1/9/01 Lunar eclipse 19:39 Cancer: west coast 12:24 PM, east coast
3:24 PM: Major changes in traditional systems are likely. Those
who are prepared with suitable tools and talents will benefit.
In the west, new careers can be converted from other occupations
or frameworks. To succeed, be willing to let go of outmoded ideas.
In the east, joining forces with those whose values are in accord
can be very nurturing and can bring fulfillment. But, make sure
to reveal secret agendas.
1/10/01 Mercury enters Aquarius 5:26 AM: Communication can directly
connect decision-makers with unrecognized alternatives. Unconventional
business models may succeed if care is exercised to honor all
those involved. Evaluate emotional content of communications for
relevance.
1/13/01 Mercury conjunct Neptune 5:48 Aquarius, 5:10 PM: Multi-layered
situations are likely. Deep inner connections make it difficult
to address single issues without direct and indirect involvement
with other issues. Spiritual or ethical principles need to be
honored, and will become the basis of new projects created at
the new Moon on January 24th.
1/16/01 Venus square Pluto 14:18 Pisces/Sagittarius, 10:35 PM
Work towards transformation of dreams into reality. Fulfillment
of dreams is possible if there is clarity about what the goal
is, and willingness to take action. Methods need to be adjustable.
Paths to a hoped-for future can open magically to those who are
prepared to take risks.
1/19/01 Sun enters Aquarius 4:16 PM: A shift is occurring in the
manner in which we focus on life. Spiritual and ethical safeguards
need to be reaffirmed. Avoid expedient measures, and keep the
large view in the fore. Patience can insure that projects are
accomplished without losing sight of their original purpose. As
Mercury enters his shadow, diligence and careful attention to
detail in issues of individuation and innovative ideas will help
to prepare for the retrograde period.
1/20/01 (U.S. Inauguration Day) Mercury square Mars 6:16 Aquarius/Scorpio;
Mars parallel Uranus 11:10 AM: Reason confronts passion to begin
a process (T-square) that comes to culmination at month's end.
Expect arguments over freedom vs. security: which to focus on
first, and which to identify as the end product. Not a simple
concept, but one that will have many perspectives. This is an
important question that will impact and modify all areas of life.
1/22/01 Mercury conjunct Uranus 19:48 Aquarius, 11:35 AM. Intensity
gathers as we marshal resistance to forces of duality. We feel
pulled between a desire to act and the need to keep safely within
old familiar patterns. At times, it's difficult to know which
way to turn, but all the answers are not yet accessible. The process
is tiring, but will eventually bring resolution.
1/24/01 New Moon 4:37 Aquarius, west coast 5:07 AM; east coast
8:07 AM. On another level, there is energy for new beginnings,
associated with ethical/spiritual issues encountered at mid January.
In the west, basic values can be revived, provided that you keep
on course with your ideals and principles. In the east, secrets
will be revealed, and groups may adopt shared values. Important
goals can be voiced that meet the needs of many. This month has
been busy with situations and issues that intertwine, and seem
to be irresolvable. All that is due to change, as: Saturn stationary
direct 24:04 Taurus, 4:24 PM. Testing time is here, as we must
recall what we have learned during the past seven months. Learn
to trust your inner voice, and be watchful as you release the
structures that do not serve. This cycle completes at the end
of April and progress can begin in the place you have been preparing.
1/25/01 Jupiter stationary direct 1:11 Gemini, 12:38 AM. Regular
channels that were unavailable in September may now be opened.
If you have done your homework, optimism and ideals can begin
to be reawakened and embraced by April. Mercury square Saturn
24:04 Aquarius/Taurus, 1:35 PM. Reason begins to assume more importance,
as structural problems become evident. Caution needs to be expressed,
but persistence is essential to overcome outmoded standards, so
that problems can be solved. Honest communication is the key.
Sun conjunct Neptune 6:16 Aquarius, 7:56 PM. Sensitivity to the
true concerns of others is the first step to solving relationship
problems. Take special care to root out the true concerns. The
emphasis is now on truth vs. perception.
1/27/01 Mars square Uranus 2:04 Scorpio/Aquarius, 3:10 AM. Courage
will help to win the challenge for independence, and the ability
to follow one's heart. A sometimes-bitter process has the opportunity
to heal now if both parties can embrace compassion and recognize
the need for trust.
1/31/01 Mercury enters Pisces 11:13 PM. There may be a week of
communication difficulties, while Mercury occupies and turn changes
direction Pisces. We have been used to spontaneous interaction,
and during the coming week there will be a need for extra sensitivity.
Folks will be likely to be overly sensitive, and the need for
extra diplomacy will be evident.
JANUARY'S SYMBOLISM
The ancient
god associated with January is Janus, Roman god of passage. He
had two faces -- one for endings and one for beginnings. Janus,
for whom January was named, was the guardian of the gateway between
the past and the future. Janus' festival, called the Kalendae
is from January 1st to 3rd. Sacrifices were also made in January
to the goddess Fortuna for favors in the coming year. Today, we
make resolutions to sacrifice destructive or useless habits to
make room for worthwhile and constructive activities and behaviors
that will lead us to good fortune. Interesting that Janus is now
in use as the company name for a mutual fund; symbolic of learning
from the past to be successful in the future by making informed
decisions in the present.
January's gemstones are the garnet and the agate -- the word garnet
is derived from the Latin, granatum, which means pomegranate.
Garnet crystals are granular, shaped like the fruits of the pomegranate.
The most prized color of the gemstone is the deep clear poppy
red of the fruit, although garnets also come in many hues (even
to red orange and yellow). These gems were reported to bring sleep
to their wearers, and to calm a restless brain. Garnets were also
associated with constancy and fidelity, and were said to fortify
the heart of the owner. The agate is a type of chalcedony, made
up of layers of color. Its history suggests it be worn to clear
emotional blockages by piercing the veil of inner levels of consciousness,
and allowing remembrance of past lives. Moss agate was worn to
balance emotions and as a blood cleanser; lace agate was worn
to release muscle spasms and tension.
January 6th marks the Christian celebration of the 12th day after
Christmas, known as Twelfth Night or Epiphany, which is derived
from the Greek and Latin root meaning appearance, manifestation,
and revealment. The celebration is symbolic of the story of the
three Wise Men from the east, who traveled 12 days and nights
to see the newborn savior. It was "revealed" to them
in a dream on the night of the Nativity, that if they followed
the "appearance" of a special star or light in the heavens,
they would find a child in whom The Christ was "manifested".
They brought with them special gifts from their homelands that
were fit to offer a king. The gifts consisted of gold, a precious
metal of Kings; frankincense (Sun ruled), an aromatic gum resin,
which represents pure prayer; and myrrh (Saturn ruled), a fragrant
but bitter-tasting gum resin used to make incense, perfume, medicine,
and holy ointments for consecration. Both resins are used in protection
rites. Epiphany is celebrated as a time of consecration - a time
of dedication to a better future.
The power of the breath is ultimate in the healing process, as
there is no life without breath. On January 19th when the Sun
changes signs from earth to air (Capricorn to Aquarius), we can
consciously release the last outbreath of Solar earth and take
in the first breath of Solar air, the first elemental shift of
the millennium. Integrating the breath with the physical expression
can provide a powerful ceremonial tool. The healing power of the
breath is developed through duration and volume. Standing facing
the east, and gently breathe in and out through the mouth - deeply
and rhythmically. With the first few outbreaths, release all pain,
frustration, anger and imbalance from the past, seeing those energies
dispersed on the wind. With each inbreath, picture each cell,
each pore being embraced by the current of healing consciousness,
driven by divine wind. Feel the healing breath as it enriches
and supports your life. After the first eight breath cycles, outbreaths
may be used to send healing energies to others.
The new Moon of January falls on the Chinese New Year, the year
of the Snake, which is supportive of developing confidence, wisdom,
depth of understanding, and compassion. May we all embrace the
positive energies of the new Millennium.
