Flood toll in Cambodia rises to 179

(Radio Australia) The death toll in Cambodia's worst floods on record has risen to 179 despite receding waters in some areas.

Cambodia's national committee for disaster management says the water level in the Mekong River as it flowed past the capital Phnom Penh had receded to 10.92 metres, down from a peak of 11.20 metres.

The International Red Cross says the unseasonally early rains, which have resulted in the worst flooding in decades in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos and Thailand will continue to wreak havoc until November.

The organisation says the floods which have already killed more than 370 people and affected about six million in the four countries, have not even reached their peak.
