Volcano Erupts In Northern Japan

A volcano erupted in northern Japan on Thursday following an earlier eruption on Sept. 4, the Sapporo District Meteorological Observatory said. No injuries or damages were reported.

Because of bad weather, the details of the eruption of Mount Komagatake on Japan's northernmost main island of Hokkaido were not known, but a light coating of volcanic ash covered cars in a town at the foot of the mountain, said Hisao Hashimoto, an agency spokesman.

A major eruption in 1929 killed two people and an eruption in 1856 killed 20. Another eruption in 1640 is believed to have killed about 700 people.

The 3,716-foot Mount Komagatake is 441 miles northeast of Tokyo.
