Tongan Islands Shaken By Strong Quake

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake hit the Pacific Ocean islands of Tonga on Tuesday at 7:18 a.m. local time, but there were no immediately available reports of injuries or damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the shallow quake was centered about 105 miles north of the island of Neiafu, located in the Vava'u Islands, and about 285 miles southwest of Pago Pago in American Samoa.

Police on Neiafu reported that, although the quake had been felt, it was insignificant.
