One big storm
weakened and another picked up steam as they blew across the mid-Atlantic
Ocean on Tuesday, forecasters said.
Hurricane
Isaac was losing power and posed no threat to land, Eric Blake,
a forecaster at the National Hurricane Center (news - web sites)
in Miami, said.
Tropical Storm
Joyce, however, was likely to become a hurricane in the next few
days, he said.
``The Caribbean
islands should monitor it but it's still a long ways away -- six
days if it moves at its current speed,'' he said.
Isaac was
located 1,140 miles east of the Leeward Islands, or near latitude
18.8 north and longitude 44.4 west at 11 a.m., according to the
NHC. It was heading west-northwest at 12 mph with maximum sustained
winds of 90 mph.
Joyce meanwhile
was moving west at 14 mph with winds of 40 mph. Blake said the
system was getting better organized and was expected to strengthen
by early Wednesday.
Joyce was
about 1,660 miles west of the Lesser Antilles at 11 a.m. or near
latitude 11.7 north and longitude 34.9 west.
