Japan Jolted By Pair Of Quakes

Southwestern Japan was rattled by two earthquakes on Monday, but there were no reports of injuries or damage from either tremor.

A magnitude 4.1 quake hit at 11:15 a.m. local time between the cities of Mifune and Jonan in Kumamoto Prefecture, located about 560 miles southwest of Tokyo. Shaking was also felt in the communities of Tomiai and Toyono.

Officials from Kumamoto reported that a magnitude 3.8 aftershock hit the region eight minutes later.

Both quakes occurred 6 miles beneath the surface of the earth.
