A tornado
roared through central Bangladesh on Tuesday, killing two people,
injuring at least 300 others and destroying numerous homes. Five
victims that required hospitalization were said to be in serious
condition.
Authorities
reported the tornado tore through five communities and caused
widespread damage to crops as well as three factories and a textile
mill near the capital city of Dhaka. Many roads were left impassable
by the tornado and rescue crews had difficulty reaching stricken
communities.
Meanwhile,
in northern and central parts of the delta nation, two days of
pounding torrential rains triggered further flash flooding. The
incessant rain caused the Padma River to burst its banks in the
district of Shariatpur, sweeping away almost 1,500 homes. Floodwaters
that inundated the city of Rajshahi, about 165 miles northwest
of Dhaka forced officials to shut down schools and some businesses.
