WASHINGTON (AP) - The State Department is preparing country-by-country
advisories to warn Americans living or traveling overseas about possible failures
related to the Year 2000 technology problem. The warnings, to be released Tuesday,
will include details about 194 nations where visiting Americans could be affected
by power outages, water shortages and other
potentially serious problems caused by the Y2K computer glitch. The reports,
which were compiled by embassies worldwide, promised to be the best road map
yet for identifying global trouble spots. Experts have long complained about
the difficulties collecting adequate information from foreign governments about
possible computer failures.
