November 24 X-Class Solar Flare

Space Weather

SOLAR FLARES: An S1- to S2-class radiation storm is in progress following two powerful solar flares on Nov. 24th. Both flares exploded over sunspot group 9236, near the center of the Sun's disk. The first eruption triggered X-ray detectors on NOAA satellites at 0500 UT; the second flare followed 10 hours later. Both explosions were X2-class events and they triggered strong radio blackouts on the sunlit side of Earth. (Above: SOHO Extreme Ultraviolet Telescope animation of a Nov. 24 X-class solar flare.)

The ongoing solar radiation storm does not pose a hazard to air travelers or astronauts.
