Heavy rains and even a few strong thunderstorms doused holiday shoppers along the eastern seaboard Friday, but drier weather is on the way for the rest of the weekend, forecasters say.
From central North Carolina all the way up to upstate New York, Friday's weather was a mess. About an inch of rain filled most gauges throughout the region, but some isolated locations saw much more.
Mt. Pocono, Pa., recorded 1.72 inches, while in western Massachusetts, 2.24 inches fell in North Adams and 3.29 inches of rain soaked Pittsfield.
In addition to the heavy rain, isolated strong thunderstorms developed in the Northeast. An unusual and destructive late-November tornado touched down in Honey Brook, Pa., northwest of Philadelphia, at about 6 p.m. EST Friday, the National Weather Service reported.
The twister, an F1 on the Fujita scale, destroyed 4 homes, damaged 25 others and leveled 2 barns. At least four people suffered injuries – two of those were reported as severe.
The rains had shifted into eastern New England by Saturday morning, and were forecast to continue moving eastward, eventually off the coast, by Sunday. Cool and dry weather is forecast for the East Coast for the rest of the holiday weekend.
