Russia's Shiveluch
volcano began erupting Monday, throwing gas and ash 6,500 feet (2,000 meters)
into the sky above the Kamchatka Peninsula. The remote Pacific peninsula is located
about 4,160 miles (6,700 km) east of Moscow.
Emergency officials reported
Tuesday that no nearby communities were in immediate danger from the explosions.
Klyuchi, the closest city, is located about 30 miles (50 km) from the 10,771-foot-high
mountain (3,283 meters). Officials have issued warnings to residents to stay at
least 20 miles (30 km) away from the base of the mountain.
Shiveluch is
the northernmost active volcano in Kamchatka, where there are about 120 volcanoes,
28 of them active. The RIA Novosti news agency reported that the volcano's two
previous eruptions were in 1854 and 1964. |
