DM: Dramatic Escalation in Violence is Imminent in Israel

The Jerusalem Post

The IDF has announced a major news conference open to foreign and local journalists this evening in Haifa.

OC Navy Adm. Yedidya Ya'ari and the head of military intelligence assessment Brig.-Gen. Amos Gilad will address the meeting in the port city.

Earlier this evening, Defense Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer issued an urgent warning regarding what he said is an imminent escalation of violence in the territories.

Ben-Eliezer warned that the Palestinians may very shortly move well beyond the use of mortars in their attacks on Israeli targets.

"My evaluation is that in the coming days, maybe even in the coming hours, we will find ourselves in a reality that will simply be hard to believe," Ben-Eliezer said. "I think that we will shortly going to move beyond mortar attacks."

The defense minister warned that Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat is bringing the region closer and closer to total chaos.

Ben-Eliezer spokesman Yarden Vatikai told The Jerusalem Post Internet Edition that he has no inofrmation for the media at the current time.

Arafat's Fatah movement has announced an emergency meeting tonight in the Gaza Strip.

The emergency gathering of Fatah members was announced in the wake of a death of a Palestinian baby in the southern Gaza Strip this afternoon as a result of IDF tank fire.

According to a senior Fatah source, "Fatah will study new ways to respond to the Israeli escalation."

JPost Radio has prepared a report on the IDF's expected major announcement.
