Greenhouse Effect to Bake Australia

World News Australia

A new report on climate change predicts temperatures over most of Australia will increase by up to six degrees by 2070.

Paula Kruger reports, the study by the government research agency, the C-S-I-R-O has led to calls for the Federal Government to support the Kyoto greenhouse protocol.

The study predicts the climate change is inevitable because greenhouse gas concentrations continue to rise despite international efforts to reduce emmissions. The C-S-I-R-O says it will result in cyclones with winds upto 20 percent stronger by the end of the century, an increase in the number of deaths and property damage from extreme weather conditions, and more damage to crops and livestock because pests such as fruit fly and cattle ticks will thrive in warmer conditions. Don Henry from the Australian Conservation Foundation says the findings reflect international reports showing Australia will be one of the regions worst hit by climate change.

NEITHER MAJOR PARTY IS AUSTRALIA HAS COMMITTED TO RATIFY THE KYOTO PROTOCOL AND THAT IS REALLY THE CRITICAL STEP THAT AUSTRALIANS SHOULD BE LOOKING FOR.
