BEIJING (UPI)
- A landslide in southern China Tuesday night caused a nine-story
apartment building to collapse killing at least 21 and injuring
many more, state media reported.
Xinhua news
agency reported that only seven occupants of the building escaped
and that rescue efforts were still going on in Wulong county,
Sichuan province around 125 miles south of the city of Chongqing.
"When
I saw the building was inclining to one side, I started to run
for life," survivor Xia Youming told Xinhua. "But just
after several steps, I felt something hit my back. When I came
to myself, I found I was on the hospital bed."
Hundreds
of police, firefighters and medical personnel were still sifting
through the debris on Wednesday hoping to find more survivors.
Local Communist
Party officials said the building had 31 apartments, 25 of which
were occupied by families at the time of the accident. The death
toll is expected to rise.
