-- A total of 176 people, including 92 children, suspected of
dysentery were hospitalized in the city of Temirtau, Kazakhstan,
Tass learned on Sunday at the Republican Agency for Emergency
Situations. According to information from the agency, wards of
local children's and infection hospitals are packed to overflowing
because of a mass hospitalization of patients. Medics put cots
even in corridors to accommodate patients.
The worst
apprehensions of doctors were confirmed in more than 80 cases.
The city epidemiological service is now inspecting water supply
systems to track down the source of infection. This is already
the second case of mass dysentery incidence in Kazakhstan since
the start of this year. Water supplies were virtually stopped
a month ago in the city of Arkalyk, Kustanai region due to a breakdown
in a power transmission line. A similar diagnosis was given to
160 patients. At that time, medics could not save two children
of six and nine years of age. They died of severe dehydration.
