Freak Windstorm Hits Utah...03/24/00
Discovery News

A train was derailed and roofs were ripped from buildings  in Utah as winds gusting up to 102 mph ripped through the Wasatch Range late  Monday night Tuesday morning.

The freak windstorm hit after midnight, toppling trucks and wreaking havoc from Weber to Utah counties. A number of tractor-trailers on areas along  Interstate 15 were toppled and authorities ordered all high-profile vehicles off the highway for the duration of the storm.

Meteorologist William J. Alder of the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, reported that the winds were powerful "downslope" winds and were spread over a wide area. A low pressure system in southern Utah combined with high pressure in northern Utah and formed gusts of high wind that blew down from the mountains.
