GRANITE FALLS, Minn. (Reuters) - A cluster of tornadoes ripped through south central Minnesota, killing one person, injuring 15 and causing extensive damage, officials said on Wednesday.
The body of one man was found beneath a pickup truck which the storm apparently tossed on top of him in Granite Falls, said Chuck Hardy, a dispatcher at the Yellow Medicine County sheriff's office. He described damage there as ``extensive.''
In one rural area, he said, a garage with a truck inside of it was picked up by the storm and dropped on an adjacent farm, with the truck still inside the building.
As many as a half-dozen funnel clouds were reported in the area Tuesday evening, including the one which officials said may have destroyed as much as 20 percent of Granite Falls, a town of more than 3,000. The city's central business district was spared but an area on the west side was heavily damaged.
Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura called out National Guard troops to help with the cleanup.
The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported in its online edition that a treatment center for gambling and substance abusers, a United Parcel Service (NYSE:UPS - news) shipping center and a grain elevator were among the buildings severely damaged.
It said debris was so heavy that snowplows were sent out immediately after the storm to clear roads and allow rescue workers into town.
