Storms Strike Minnesota...07/26/00

GRANITE FALLS, Minn. (AP) -- High winds and possibly several tornadoes hit this southwestern Minnesota town Tuesday night, injuring some people and doing significant damage to buildings.

KSTP-TV and KARE-TV reported one person was dead.

Snowplows were clearing roads so emergency vehicles could get to the injured, city officials said.

A rescue command post was set up at the technical college in town, said City Manager Bill Lavin, who could not confirm the fatality nor the number of injured.

He said he ''very definitely'' saw a tornado, both on the ground and then go back into the clouds. He said he heard ''the typical train sound and the popping of the ear drums as it went over head.''

Rescue vehicles from towns in a 40-mile radius were dispatched to Granite Falls, a town of about 3,000 people.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning at 6:17 p.m.

One witness, Deborah Krepela, said she was standing outside of the restaurant she runs and saw a tornado pass through the middle of town. It hit homes, and ''debris was flying everywhere,'' she said. http://www.newsday.com/ap/topnews/ap720.htm
