A wide swath of Melbourne's eastern suburbs was jolted by the Australian city's strongest quake in 68 years on Monday. Although the tremor only registered magnitude 3.2, it was the most powerful to hit the city since 1932.
Seismologist Gary Gibson said the region was being compressed from southeast to northwest. He reported that the Dandenong Ranges and the Mornington Peninsula were being very slowly squeezed up to Port Phillip Bay. He noted
that a "couple of centimeters" of movement had been recorded in recent times.
