Update: Heat DeathToll Climbs To 54...07/29/99

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The body of 83-year-old Russell E. Dowley was found in his brick bungalow. Despite a scorching heat wave, the windows were closed and a fan and two air conditioners were turned off. "Air conditioning wasn't a part of their lives while they were growing up, and a lot of them feel they don't need it now," Jacqualine Hutchinson, spokeswoman for Operation Weather Survival, said Wednesday. The heat wave that has hit the Midwest and the East has led to the deaths of at least 55 people since July 19. There have been 18 deaths in Missouri, 18 in Illinois, 10 in Ohio, two in North Carolina, Georgia and Maryland and one each in Pennsylvania, Arkansas and Oklahoma.
