AHMEDABAD,
India (Reuters) - Thousands of people have fled Ahmedabad
(news - web sites), the biggest city in India's quake-hit
western state of Gujarat, following widespread fears of
fresh tremors, officials said on Tuesday.
``Yes,
there are confirmed reports that people are leaving. We
cannot stop people from going,'' Ahmedabad Police Commissioner
P.C. Panday told Reuters.
Ahmedabad,
with a population of five million, is the main city in Gujarat,
which bore the brunt of Friday's quake.
Hundreds
of people jostled for space during the night at Ahmedabad
railway station, waiting for the next train out.
``People
are leaving in all directions. Some are going to Bombay
and others are leaving for Delhi and Rajasthan,'' a Railway
official, who did not want to be named, said.
Ahmedabad
residents said rumors of another earthquake had alarmed
people.
