UN Envoy Seeks New Funds for Horn of Africa Drought Victims

The United Nations has launched an appeal for 353 million US dollars in new aid to help 13 million people living in severe conditions caused by drought in the Horn of Africa region.

Catherine Bertini, the UN special envoy for aid to Horn of Africa drought victims, says the next six months will be particularly critical, and adequate rains are essential.

Meteorologists say the situation may improve for Ethiopia and Somalia but that large areas of Kenya, Eritrea, Tanzania and Djibouti have yet to see signs of rain.
