Ash From Volcano Blankets Villages...02/29/00

GUINOBATAN, Philippines (AP) - Thick clouds of ash blanketed villages at the foot of Mayon volcano Tuesday after a series of powerful eruptions sent residents fleeing and cut power to thousands of villages. There were no reports of casualties from the eruptions that began last week, including one on Monday that officials said was stronger than an eruption in 1993 that killed more than 70 people. In each explosion Tuesday, the 8,118-foot volcano belched red hot rocks and a column of ash as high as 7.5 miles. The ashes were driven by the wind as far as 8.5 miles southwest of the volcano, said Ernesto Corpuz of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology. More than 47,000 people have been evacuated from villages in a 5-mile zone.
