Deep Freeze Grips Europe

7am.com News

Bitter weather is causing chaos throughout much of Europe and police have urged people to stay at home, rather than risk sub zero temperatures outside.

Forecasters predict the severe chill will last until at least tomorrow and probably longer.

In Britain, where 7 inches of snow has fallen in many places and temperatures have been as low as 10 degrees, the transport systems have failed to cope. Trains have been delayed or cancelled, airports are closed and freezing fog and black ice are disrupting road traffic.

The sea in some northern British ports has frozen over.

Eastern and northern Europe are also struggling against snow, ice and sub zero temperatures. The mercury in Berlin, Moscow and other capitals, has been as low as –15 degrees.

In southern Europe, which has had rain rather than snow, there’s been flooding and 2,000 people were forced to evacuate their homes in Montenegro.

Weather forecasters say the worst is by no means over. A deep depression over the eastern Atlantic will move onto Europe over the next 48 hours, bringing gale force winds and heavy rain, which will melt the snow and produce flooding.
