California Quake Scenario Follow-up

By Larry Wright

I am attaching a link to USGS Earthquake Map of the area I have mentioned previously as a possible indication of the Big One that may be about to occur in California. I am becoming quite concerned about this because I live not to very far from this location.

On this map you will notice recent earthquakes continuing to occur in and near the area mentioned previously in past messages. That line you see running from the left through Tejon Pass on down to Palmdale is the San Andreas Fault. Note the numerous cracks and faults located in Northridge and San Fernando and Los Angeles just below. The area of greatest concern is almost a triangle between Maricopa on the north side of the San Andreas to Santa Barbara on the south side left to Palmdale just above the San Andreas on the right side east.

Because of the eastward bend of the San Andreas through Tejon Pass down to Palmdale and the eastward bend of the coastline just below, the Pacificand North American Tectonic Plates are unable to slip past each other. The bind is causing the many faults and fractures in the Northridge area. You will recall the earthquakes a few years back in this area. Also, you have probably heard of the Palmdale Bulge in which land areas near Palmdale have risen because of the tremendous pressure caused by this bind.

You will notice that the San Andreas is not directly connected to the fractured area in Northridge. There are a few faults that get close butno direct connection. What I fear is beginning to happen is that deep fractures are beginning to develop between the Northridge area and the San Andreas that will connect the two fault systems. Once this happens the eastward bend of the San Andreas at around Tejon Pass will be effectively breached. With the merging of these two fault systems the tectonic plates will be free to move because of the more straight line configuration from the Northridge area to the San Andreas Fault.

You will note the recent earthquakes in and near this area. This indicates to me that fracturing between there two systems is beginning to happen. With stresses continuing to build it may not be very long before this whole area begins to break up. The consequences will be a sudden release of the current bind between the tectonic plates with a resulting slip movement of the San Andreas that will cause a major earthquake in California.
