| Popocatepetl Reawakens |
Mexico's Popocatepetl
Volcano spewed plumes of smoke, gas and ash from its crater on
Thursday in a new phase of heightened activity. The volcano has
erupted hundreds of times since last Monday.
On Thursday,
the cloud from Popocatepetl grew to a 50-mile radius and blanketed
nearby communities, as well as the capital city, 40 miles to the
northwest, with a light rain of ash.
Military troops
reviewed evacuation procedures with residents, and warnings were
issued to remain at least 4 miles away from the volcano's crater.
Melchiades Morales, governor of the state of Puebla in which Popocatepetl
is located, reported that there were no large scale evacuation
plans in place.
Cervardo de
la Cruz, a scientist at the National Autonomous University of
Mexico, reported on local radio that Popocatepetl's rate of activity
was fairly constant.
