New Storms Expected To Hit UK

London, IRNA - More storms accompanied by gale-force winds were expected to hit parts of the UK Thursday, while the Meteorological Office warned that winter downpours could persist until February.

Heavy rain on Wednesday brought 41 fresh flood warnings for 25 rivers across the UK. The new storms were predicted to last throughout the weekend, with conditions mirroring the severe flooding in October, when there were also tornadoes. "This weekend's storm will be on a similar scale to the last one on October 30," the Meteorological Office warned. Some parts of Britain, it said would get 2.5 inches (6 cms) of rain causing problems for rivers already on alert.

The weather warning comes as the Environment Agency launched a new website to allow people to find out how vulnerable they are to flooding. The launch followed a survey by the British Market Research Bureau that discovered more than 50 per cent of people, who live in flood risk areas, were still not aware of the danger to their property.
