Tokyo Jolted By Early-morning Quake

7am News

Tokyo residents were woken Tuesday morning by an earthquake of magnitude 5.5 which shook buildings and dwellings around the city and surrounding areas.

Centered 25 miles beneath the ocean floor, some 70 miles northeast of the city, the quake caused little damage and there were no reports of injury.

Although the quake's epicenter was out at sea, authorities were not expecting a tsunami (tidal wave) or any strong aftershocks.

Japan frequently experiences small to medium sized tremors due to its location on the Pacific "rim of fire" which is formed by the intersection of several tectonic plates where parts of the earth's crust are thrust together.
