there are several other NEO's which have not been mentioned for
fear of "unnecessary concern". NASA has stated there are an estimated
700,000 NEO's under the size of one kilometer which have not been
tracked. More as this story develops.
On Nov. 29th,
MIT's LINEAR program discovered a new potentially hazardous asteroid,
2000 WO107. The 400m-wide space rock passed our planet on Wednesday
about 40 times farther away than the Moon; there was no danger
of a collision.
It is remarkable
in at least one way: it comes very close to the Sun. Its perihelion
distance is only 0.2 AU, well inside the orbit of Mercury
Warning
of Solar Flares Directed at Earth
Sunspot group
9246 has developed a complicated beta-gamma magnetic field that
could harbor energy for powerful solar flares. Eruptions from
the active region, which is near the center of the Sun's disk,
would likely be Earth-directed.
