Coconut Ants Invade Nebraska

Ananova

Kitchens in a Nebraska town are being invaded by ants that smell of coconuts.

Record numbers of people are complaining about the ants and say they have noticed the smell when they squash them .

Local experts say they are called 'odorous ants' and have moved indoors because there aren't enough aphids to feed on.

Barb Ogg, from the University of Nebraska, says they normally go for sweet food.

She told The Lincoln Journal Star: "It is easy to tell this type of ant because when you smash them they have a faint but distinctive coconut odour.

"Odorous house ants are the only ants that smell like coconut."
