The seemingly
relentless rise in outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease in Britain
continues, with government putting the number of infected sites
in the country and in Northern Ireland at 323.
In all, 322
of the sites are scattered across England, Wales and Scotland.
The remaining site was detected in Northern Ireland early this
month.
Some 25 new
outbreaks were found today -- above the 20 or so average new cases
reported daily since the outbreak was first discovered on February
19.

Minister Nick Brown said he had not ruled out a cull of healthy
animals in areas around infected farms in Devon in the southwest
of the country.
It would be
similar to the culls being carried out in Cumbria in northwestern
England and Dumfries and Galloway in Scotland.
The plan being
implemented in the two areas worst hit by the current crisis was
likely to see some 300,000 animals destroyed, Mr Brown said.
