Kraft Recalls Cottage Cheese As FDA Detects E. Coli...06/02/00

NORTHFIELD, Ill. (Reuters) - Kraft Foods Inc., a unit of Philip Morris Cos. Inc., said on Thursday it was recalling one day's production of six Breakstone's and Light n' Lively cottage cheese products after the Food & Drug Administration detected E. coli in several samples.

The FDA found the potentially deadly bacteria in samples of the 16 oz. Breakstone's Free Small Curd Fat Free Cottage Cheese.

Kraft said the other Breakstone's and Light n' Lively cottage cheese products that were made on the same day and on the same line also were recalled as a precaution.

They include 16 oz. Breakstone's Free Small Curd Fat Free Cottage Cheese, 24 oz. Breakstone's Free Small Curd Fat Free Cottage Cheese, 16 oz. Breakstone's 4 percent Milkfat Min. Small Curd Smooth & Creamy Cottage Cheese, 24 oz. Breakstone's 4 percent Milkfat Min. Small Curd Smooth & Creamy Cottage Cheese, 24 oz. Light n'Lively Free Fat Free Cottage Cheese with Calcium, and 24 oz. Light n' Lively 1 percent Milkfat Lowfat Cottage Cheese with Calcium.

The products were distributed nationally, primarily in states east of the Mississippi, all with the date and plant code 06 JUN 00 W appearing on the bottom of the cup.

E. coli can cause severe diarrhea, serious kidney damage and even death in some individuals.

The company said no illnesses have been reported.
