Sizzler Restaurant Closed in E.coli Outbreak...07/28/00

MILWAUKEE - A hand-written sign taped to the door of the Sizzler restaurant says "Closed for Repairs.

The Milwaukee County Health Department closed the family-style steakhouse Wednesday after at least three adults and seven children who ate there this month were diagnosed with E.coli bacteria infections. Fifteen cases of E.coli infection have been confirmed in the county this month.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Thursday said a 3-year-old South Milwaukee girl was in critical condition at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin with kidney failure and that two other children were treated for the bacteria.

The children, who ate meals at the restaurant between July 15 and July 19, all suffered from the same bacteria, E.coli 0157:H7, which normally is responsible for one of two illnesses a month in the Milwaukee area.

A 78-year-old woman was in fair condition at St. Luke's Medical Center and at least four other adults were treated but not admitted.

Anyone who ate at the Sizzler since July 10 is being asked to contact the health department immediately even if they did not become ill. Diners suffering abdominal pain, cramping, vomiting, diarrhea or flu-like symptoms should call a doctor.

Sizzler USA Chief Executive Officer Thomas Metzger flew to Milwaukee and offered to pay the medical expenses of anyone sickened by E.coli.
