VIENNA (Reuters) - Austrian
vets investigated a suspected case of swine fever at a pig farm in the northwest
of the country on Friday, local news agency APA said.
The regional veterinary
service acted after an unidentified man produced footage of a pig, showing symptoms
of the highly contagious disease, APA said, citing the office of senior veterinary
official Hans Achatz in the region of Upper Austria.
It said vets had
visited the farm and taken samples, which would be sent on Monday to be tested.
Results were expected 48 hours later.
No one at the veterinary service
was immediately available for comment.
Swine fever is not dangerous to
humans but can wipe out pig populations.
Last year, Britain battled with
an outbreak of swine fever which led to a ban on the movement of pigs and a large
scale slaughter programme. |
