DAR ES SALAAM  - At least eight people have died after they drank a poisonous alcoholic brew in the Kimara suburbs of the Tanzanian capital, the daily Mtanzania newspaper reported Tuesday.

Quoting hospital sources, Mtanzania said that 10 people who had consumed the brew were also admitted to Dar es Salaam's Muhimbili National Hospital for treatment.

Hospital spokesman MacDonald Mwaijande said the victims drank Komoni, an alcoholic brew made from maize flour on Monday morning.

"Suddenly, some of them started vomiting and complaining of abdominal pain. They were rushed here, where two died shortly on arrival, and six others died some hours later," Mtanzania quoted Mwaijande as saying.
