Nearly 1,400 patients were currently registered in hospitals in the capital and rural areas, said Thierry Dumont, a physician with the aid group Doctors Without Borders. Many more infected victims were languishing in their homes without care.
The deaths were recorded since the epidemic began in mid-December, although most occurred since March.
Doctors Without Borders distributed more than 130,000 vaccines in northern and central areas of the country this week and another 200,000 doses were being prepared, Dumont said.
